Contains spoilers for PIER.

It was a summer to regret.

As a blaze consumed Clayham-on-Sea’s beloved pier, Envy MacAvoy watched from the shoreline as rescue workers pulled Kristi Hallett’s body from the water.

The events leading up to her death are known to only two people: her sister, Claire Hallett, and Claire’s ex-boyfriend, Victor Grainger. Although reported as a tragic accident, it was in fact Claire who was solely responsible for Kristi’s demise. In a moment of self-preservation, however, Claire framed Victor for the murder with a well-timed photo.

Meanwhile, the fire - started by nightclub owner, Damon Fox, in an attempt to replenish his business partner’s stolen funds - claimed another life: the pier’s owner, Patrick Shaw.

Unknown to anybody, the fire was started by local nightclub owner, Damon Fox. Entangled in debt and attempting to replenish the funds he stole from his business partner, Patrick Shaw, Damon started a seemingly untraceable fire in the pier’s office. Unknown to him, Patrick - the pier’s owner - was working late and perished in the flames.

Meanwhile, his daughter and protege, Havannah Shaw, watched the fire unfold from her bedroom, where she was consummating a summer romance with the travelling fairground worker, Ronan Costello

In the wake of her father’s death, Havannah senses the vultures circling and closes herself off emotionally. As such, she ended her brief relationship with Ronan, only to be quickly taken under Damon’s wing with the promise that he’ll look after her - a promise he also made to Kristi before her death.

Victor left town shortly after the blaze, seeking to distance himself from both Claire’s extortion and the games played by those in his social circle. And as for Claire’s best friend, Envy, trauma and guilt have silenced her; she left for university and has yet to look back out of guilt.

Now, summer’s over; winter has Clayham-on-Sea in its vice-like grip; and everybody is about to learn that the truth has consequences.
